Kilimanjaro International sits between Arusha and Moshi in northern Tanzania — the gateway to Kilimanjaro climbs, the northern safari circuit and the coffee-country lodges of the highlands. From Nairobi it is barely an hour by private aircraft, which turns what is otherwise a full day of border crossings and shuttle buses into a short morning hop.
The flight
Departing Wilson Airport, the routing runs south past the Athi plains with — on a clear day — Kilimanjaro's snow-capped summit visible from the cruise. Flight time is around one hour. This is an international sector, so departures can also be arranged from Jomo Kenyatta International where that suits connections better.
Airports and arrival
Kilimanjaro International (JRO) handles international arrivals with customs and immigration on the field; our handling agents meet the aircraft and walk you through formalities in minutes. For safari itineraries deeper into the circuit, Arusha (ARK) is the domestic hub for light aircraft onward to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara — we can route you Nairobi to JRO for clearance and onward to your strip in one seamless plan.
The right aircraft
- Beechcraft King Air — the sweet spot for this sector: pressurised, quick, and comfortable for up to eight.
- Cessna Grand Caravan — economical for small groups, and ideal if your itinerary continues to bush strips.
- Light jets — for executive travel or onward connections beyond northern Tanzania.
Good to know
- Travel documents: passports are required; visa requirements depend on nationality — check before travel, and our team will flag what applies when you book.
- Climbing season: January–March and June–October are the favoured Kilimanjaro climbing windows; equipment and duffel bags travel easily on a private aircraft.
- Safari connections: flying private means your Nairobi arrival and your Serengeti airstrip can be linked the same day — no overnight layover in Arusha unless you want one.
- Border efficiency: the flight replaces the Namanga road crossing, which can consume half a day in each direction.
Tell us your final destination — the mountain, the crater or the Serengeti — and we will build the flight plan around it.
