Empty Leg Flights, Explained: Private Charter at a Fraction of the Price

Every one-way charter creates a hidden second flight. An aircraft that takes a party from Nairobi to the coast must eventually come home — and unless another booking fills it, it comes home empty. That repositioning sector is an empty leg, and it is the closest thing private aviation has to a genuine bargain.

Why empty legs are cheaper

The aircraft is flying anyway. The crew is rostered, the sector is planned, and every seat is empty. Selling that flight at a reduction recovers cost the operator would otherwise write off entirely — so empty legs are routinely offered well below the equivalent on-demand charter price. It is not a promotion; it is the economics of repositioning.

The trade-offs, honestly

Empty legs are wonderful when they fit and frustrating when forced. Know the rules of the game before you play:

• The schedule is the schedule. An empty leg exists because of someone else's trip. The date, the routing and the aircraft are fixed — you fit the flight, not the reverse.
• They can move or vanish. If the originating client changes their plans, the empty leg changes too — sometimes at short notice. Treat an empty leg as firm-when-flown, and never build an unmissable connection on one.
• They are one-way by nature. Your return is a separate arrangement — another empty leg if the timing is kind, a scheduled flight, or a standard charter.
• First come, first flown. Good sectors — coast runs before holiday weekends, regional capitals after event dates — go quickly.

Who empty legs suit best

Flexible travellers, spontaneous weekends, and anyone whose diary can bend a day in either direction. A couple who can take the Diani flight on Thursday instead of Friday; a business traveller happy to return from Mombasa a half-day early; a family who treats the destination as the plan and the date as a detail. For them, empty legs deliver the full private-cabin experience at a fraction of the usual figure.

How to actually catch one

• Tell us your intentions. The best empty-leg users are the ones we know to call. If you tell us "any weekend, coast, four of us", we will flag matching sectors the moment they appear.
• Move quickly and confirm simply. When a sector fits, a short confirmation secures it — the quote form or a WhatsApp message is enough to start.
• Pair it cleverly. An empty leg one way and a scheduled airline the other is a perfectly good trip. So is an empty leg that positions you for a safari — the Mara does not care how elegantly you arrived.

A note on expectations

An empty leg is the same aircraft, the same crew and the same cabin as full-price charter — nothing about the flight itself is discounted except the number.
