Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, Zanzibar

Abeid Amani Karume International is Zanzibar's airport, just outside Stone Town — the arrival point for the island's beaches, and the final stop of the classic bush-and-beach itinerary.

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ / HTZA) sits a few kilometres south of Stone Town on Unguja, Zanzibar's main island. It handles everything from light aircraft to long-haul jets, and for private arrivals the experience is short and simple: our handling agents manage customs and immigration, and your transfer is waiting on the apron side.

Flights from Nairobi and the region

The direct sector from Nairobi takes about an hour and three-quarters. Zanzibar also connects in a short hop from Dar es Salaam — around fifteen minutes — and from the Tanzanian safari circuit, which is how the classic safari-then-beach itinerary ends: Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar sand in an afternoon.

Getting to your hotel

Stone Town's hotels are ten to fifteen minutes from the field. The beach resorts are further: Nungwi and Kendwa in the north and Paje, Jambiani and Matemwe on the east coast are roughly an hour by road. Transfers are easily arranged to meet your flight — and for some resorts a helicopter transfer is available when the occasion calls for it.

When to go

The island's long dry season runs June to October, with a second window December to February — kitesurfing season on the east coast. July–September and the Christmas–New Year period are peak: hotels and charter capacity both book early.

Good to know

  • Documents: passports required; Tanzanian visa requirements depend on nationality, with many available on arrival.
  • Occasions: honeymoons and milestone celebrations are this island's trade — tell us the occasion when you book and we will treat it accordingly.
  • Combinations: Nairobi, the Mara or the Serengeti, then Zanzibar — one aircraft plan, no scheduled connections, no lost half-days.
